Women and the Church

“The woman you gave me to be with me, she gave me the fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
(Genesis 3:12)

In many ways, the history of women in the Church and society began in the Garden of Eden with the apple! This presentation will follow just a few threads in cultures and in the Church that relate to women. We will consider some darkness but also some brightness that shines through women of different times, such as Catherine of Siena and Teresa of Avila. The greatest brightness, however, will be seen in the gifts of women to the Church, off to the side in the opinion of some, but quietly and completely the center and heart of all that happens. Where would the Church be without women? What might or should be the role of women in the future of the Church?

Presenter: Sister Elissa Rinere, CP, is a Sisters of the Cross and Passion member. She is originally from New York City but has lived most of her religious life in New England. In addition to an M.A. in Secondary Education from URI, Sister has a doctorate in canon law (J.C.D.) from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.

This program includes lunch.
