Merton on the Invitation to Non-Violence on Zoom

November 4, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Thomas Merton on the meaning, insights, and invitation to non-violence applied to our polarized world.

Thomas Merton was one of the foremost Catholic Spiritual writers of the late 20th Century. His Contemplative Journey led him to deep spiritual insights which he applied to the pressing social issues of his time. Thomas Merton came to see non-violence as the normative way Christians are called to engage the world. Merton’s view was revealed to him through his reading of and reflections on the Christian Gospels and his core spiritual conviction regarding the total solidarity of all. He found further inspiration and insights from the life and non-violent movements of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. For Thomas Merton, the roots of violence lie in a denial of our common human condition, a distorted, dualistic perception of self and society that projects one’s own unadmitted evil upon the other. He came to see that non-violence is built on the basic unity of man. It is not out for the conversion of the wicked to the ideas of the good, but for the healing and reconciliation of man with himself, man the person and man the human family.

This workshop will explore Thomas Merton’s key insights into the meaning of non-violence and how Merton’s invitation to engage non-violently applies to the polarized world we live in today.
