In Memoriam: Sister Lillian Dempsey, CP – 1939-2024

Sister Lillian Dempsey (formally Sister Mary John), a Sister of the Cross &Passion died peacefully on April 24, 2024, at Bayberry Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation in Pascoag, Rhode Island.

Born to the late John and Eva (Savoie) Dempsey on December 1, 1939, Sister graduated from the Assumption School and St. Xavier’s Academy and received her master’s degree from Providence College. Sister entered the Passionist Sisters in August 1957 and made her final profession in 1963.

An accomplished musician and educator in the Providence Diocese, Sister served at Prout High School as co-principal and educator for over fourteen years and was always involved in The Prout – Hendricken Productions in conjunction with Brother John Neidl. She later served as principal of Bishop Mcvinney and Holy Name schools in Providence as well as on the team at Our Lady of Calvary Retreat Center in Farmington, Connecticut. Sister’s personality endeared her to many, and her commitment to her Passionist vocation was evident in the way she lived and shared her life with others.

She is survived by her brother, John, and his wife, Mary Ann; a niece, Christine Constant, and her husband, Tad; and a nephew, John, his wife, Tracey, and their children, Kiara and Jordan. She is also survived by cousins and many friends and acquaintances.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 29, 2024, from 10:00 to 11:00 am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, High Street in Wakefield, immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. The interment will be at St.
Francis Cemetery in Peace Dale.
