Retreat Theme: How Can I Keep from Singing
The theme for our 2019-2020 retreat season is inspired by an old American hymn: How Can I Keep from Singing? This hymn and our retreat are all about perspective. In spite of all the troubles of this life and our world, the song proclaims,
No storm can shake my inmost calm
while to that Rock I’m clinging.
Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth,
how can I keep from singing?
Through all the tumult and the strife,
I hear that music ringing.
It finds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?
During our retreat we will discover how to hear “that music” ringing in our own souls and also in our world, by learning how to listen deeply to this love-song of the Spirit, that is forever calling us and teaching our hearts to sing.
The invitation is to first hear the song and then like a little bird that somehow senses the dawn, carefully start to sing while it is still dark.
Our song, born of faith, hope, and love can heal us, our families and our wounded world.
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
a fountain ever springing!
All things are mine since I am his!
How can I keep from singing?
